eat fresh

i am sitting at subway on state & pearson st., having a teriyaki onion chicken sandwich.

it's one of those eating experiences where the woman in front of me was making ridiculous requests of the sandwich artists and they were getting frustrated.  their frustration overflowed into the creation of my sandwich where things were flipped, flopped and smacked around.

then, i went to get water and a repairman was working on the machine.  he had his headphones in, so when the cashier asked if it would be okay if i got some water, he didn't hear at first.  then i went to fill my cup with ice.  the repair man immediately reacted and said, "no don't get the ice.  it's..." and never finished his sentence.  i didn't ask, but just got water.  why the water is safer than the ice seem a bit strange.

thus here i sit, having ingested this sandwich (with strangely chewy chicken) and water and i'm wondering if i will be throwing up later.

living in chicago is all about risk.

. . .

there is also a woman sitting next to me speaking VERY loudly on her cell phone.  i can hear every word.  there is no attempt for her to quiet her voice.

i really don't understand that.  maybe it's because i am more introverted.  but do you want other people hearing your business?  really?

maybe i should do some informal research to help myself understand these incidents.  maybe i should walk over to her, sit down, grab a chip from her bag and ask her a series of questions about her level of awareness (does she know that i now know exactly how her presentation went and how she doesn't like how her teacher grades?), her opinion of "loud" and "soft" (maybe i could make some example noises),  if she is aware, what motivated her to speak so loudly, and her opinion of etiquette related to public cell phone use.

...or i could just throw my sketchy onion sandwich at her feet while she walks by me.

...the woman at the next table just told the man she was with that she had gotten sick from the baloney sandwich she ate.  prophetic?

. . .

also, i realized i have one more paper i need to be working on this week.

the timing is unfortunate since i want to do absolutely anything other than write papers or study.  even on this perfect, rainy-study day.

  1. if you ever conduct the "take a strangers food and start asking questions" experiment, I would love to hear how that turns out!
