today i finally redeemed a christmas gift from my awesome aunt connie.
a student membership to the chicago art institute.
this membership includes random perks as well as admission for two adults every time i go! i felt very high class when i got my temporary card, bypassed all the ticket lines and the "gatekeeper" saw that i was a member and said, "go right ahead."
i didn't stay long, but i did look at half of the matisse exhibit. now, i don't know much about art. i'm more of a cultured "wannabe".
anyway, i appreciated the matisse exhibit because:
- there were a lot of nudes (sketches). not that i'm into nudity... overall... but it is so refreshing to see women's bodies that are real! the models had pudge, misshapen breasts and not a touch of air-brushed-ness. it made me and my own non-conforming body feel quite at home. furthermore, if matisse shifted any of the outlines, he made them more geometric or bulky, not waifish like current trends.
- his fears. i always appreciate when people are honest about their fears. his honesty was particularly intriguing because he feared being a cubist, but feared not being a cubist. some of his conversations with friends were featured and he revealed these thoughts while his friends and students revealed their fears of being honest about their opinions of his artwork.
- the particular collection. it was studying the relationship between a few specific pieces and their development over a span of 5 years(ish). his one painting, bathers by a river had his final work as well as how it had progressed. fascinating! i wanted to tell him, "matisse! i love how it turned out!"
