sister emma

today has been the first cool day in a sequence of extraordinarily humid days.

like many experiences of extremes, they tend to help you become focused on taking pleasure in the small things.

like today, i was able to drink a hot cup of coffee in my living room without sweating profusely.

one of the many things chicago has given me is solidarity and acceptance of my sweating issue.  it has reached a point, in these past few days, where i have stopped trying to fight the sweat.  this has been encouraged by my observation of my fellow, sweaty chicagoans.  in fact, in church on sunday, i was not the only one with sweat dripping down my hair onto my legs.  nor was my colored tank top the only one marked by a damp, dark spot in the back where my spine hit the pew.

but today.  ahhh today, this cool oasis of temperature, has been a much needed break from the oppressive heat.

. . .

i am also arranging to visit with a spiritual director.  in that process, i was in contact with a nun, or "sister" named sister emma.  she was the most delightful person on the phone.  in fact, she was almost giggly.  in my head, i was picturing this 60-year-old, giggling, latina nun listening to me and writing down my information.  it was so delightful.  like a phone-call-ice-cream-cone.
