coffee and dessert at julius meinl
this is such a treasure! luke (the new friend :)) took me here and i loved it's european flair! julius meinl is an austrian coffee shop/restaurant. we had delicious treats that i can't even spell :), but the austrians do know how to do pastries. the only strange thing about this eatery is that in random corners there are small golden statues of sitting children. for christmas, they are all wearing santa hats. this is slightly disturbing to me for some reason... i should've taken a photo.
the following day, a social work friend and i went to this documentary. doctors without borders is a french NGO that sets up hospitals in countries in crisis. the documentary followed some doctors in liberia and congo, africa. what was cool about this is that it was only being shown one time at select theaters around the city. following the documentary was a panel of individuals who discussed the movie live. on that panel were two of the doctors the movie featured, a woman from the NGO, the minister of health in liberia and a journalist. it was a fascinating and sad reminder that war and disaster aren't cleaned up so quickly in other nations and its effects can still be felt 10-30 years after "peace" has been established.
the funny part about this adventure was that i became incredibly motion sick with twenty minutes left of the movie. i hadn't realized how sick i was becoming because i was so drawn into the story. luckily, i exited the movie theater in time and got some fresh air before anything drastic happened!
living in emergency
this week, i was also sent this christmas pickle ornament that made me laugh and cry so much! i also discovered that this pickle is not just a silly ornament in the collection that also includes ornamented ketchup bottles and hamburgers... no! it is actually a traditional game people play at christmas. for more info, check out "hide the pickle".
and lastly, i almost hesitate to show this on the blog. but, as it has become a pivotal part of my experience here in chicago, i must include it.
this picture below, my friends, is mold. this mold was found on my wall, in my room!!!!!!
i am horrified to report that the most disgusting experience in chicago has been found merely two feet from my bed. YUCK!
mold, apparently, is a well known visitor in "city apartments" (aka - old apartments in the city). is is especially fond of bathrooms without ventilation. i was coming to terms with this in our bathroom, but i draw the line at mold making itself a resident in my bedroom. hopefully when i come back from break, it will be gone.
