schwarms of shawarma

"leah, try some shawarma."

"uhh... what kind is it? is it lamb? i don't really like lamb. my last experience was bad."

"yes, but it is very good. you should try it."

(sound of an iraqi and ukranian munching)

"hm... okay... "

(i pull out my spoon - yes i keep a spoon on hand at the internship - and start eating the shawarma)

"oh, yum! wow... this is good. this is very redemptive!"

"yes, it is very good."

(more munching)

"you should try this. this is liver." (pointing to a different area on the same plate)

(he pops it into his mouth)

(leah stops chewing. her eyes widen)

"... HAVE I BEEN EATING LIVER?!?!"

(the sound of an iraqi and ukranian man laughing at me... i wish i could capture their accents and intonations, so wonderful!)

thankfully, i was not eating liver. though i did try the liver. then i spit it out. but the lamb shawarma... wow, that was tasty!

_______

on a less humorous note, the royal caribbean cruise line is letting cruise ships dock on haiti again. really people? to quote my coworker, "this is more disgusting than poverty tourism... sometimes, i hate humans."
